ISMETT, confirmed as IRCCS.

This morning, the Italian Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin, signed a decree confirming the research-oriented nature of ISMETT. "Being re-accredited by the Italian Government as a research hospital," said Angelo Luca, MD, Director of ISMETT, "is a further confirmation of the strategic role played by ISMETT with regard to the scientific research programs of the Italian Ministry of Health, on which all 49 Italian research hospitals depend. This is also a recognition of the value of a hospital that combines clinical excellence and innovation with basic, clinical, and translational research. We are working to make ISMETT grow and be better able to meet the new challenges in the field of research, i.e., giving value to patents and encouraging technology transfer to improve patient care and treatments (nowadays, it takes 14 years to bring an idea from bench to bedside). In this regard, thanks to the support of the Regional Health Commission, next year we will increase the number of hospital beds from 78 to 114 and will inaugurate the new heart center. We are working also on creating an increasingly stronger connection between ISMETT and the Ri.MED Foundation. Our researchers are already working together with Ri.MED researchers in our GMP Facility at ISMETT, which has been rated by the regional commission of productive activities as the third most important research infrastructure in the National Research Infrastructure Program."

ISMETT was first recognized as an IRCCS in the field of end-stage organ failure treatment and research in September 2014. ISMETT conducts research activity in the following areas: organ transplantation and end-stage organ failure; innovative interventional and diagnostic techniques; regenerative medicine; clinical immunology and immunotherapy; infectious diseases and molecular medicine; health care information and communication technologies.

The process for IRCCS re-accreditation started last summer. According to current regulations, research institutes must submit documentary evidence of conducted research and scientific activity to the Ministry of Health every two years, as well as other clinical and financial data regarding the hospital. In late October, a group of experts from the Ministry of Health visited ISMETT, together with representatives of the Regional Health Commission, to verify ISMETT's standards. Today, this prestigious recognition from the Ministry of Health was received.
